Joseph and Patricia Brown, property owners of 84 W. Sixth St. in Dunkirk, have been named Rising Star winners for June.
Thanks to the Browns, one of the city's most visible and dilapidated homes was given a refreshing and proud new appearance. It started with the clearing of land once overrun with unkempt bushes and tall grass, followed by a new front porch, windows and doors, along with a new deck on the back.
A new roof was installed by Scott Collins of C&M Painting, a fresh coat of tan paint was applied by Howard Bremer Painting and Phil Biniwitz of BECC Electric handled the home's electrical upgrades.

For their efforts, the Browns received a $100 gift certificate to The Home Depot, courtesy of assistant store manager Jarrod Seeley.
The Rising Star program was created to promote and recognize city of Dunkirk property owners who make significant exterior improvements to their existing residential homes, which in turn helps to elevate the image of city neighborhoods.
Each month through October, a $100 gift certificate will be presented to the winning property owner. Program guidelines and nomination forms are available from the City Clerk's office and the following Rising Star sponsors: Add Lumber, Bargain Outlet, Service Hardware and the Home Depot.
All exterior home improvements will be considered and residents are encouraged to apply.
