Special to the OBSERVER
On a hot and sunny Thursday morning, a van carrying Cassadaga Job Corps students arrived at the Lakeshore Humane Society's Adoption Center at 431 E. Chestnut St. in Dunkirk.
As the students disembarked, their arms were full of a wide variety of items they had purchased for the many kittens, cats and dogs awaiting adoption. Their donations included cat and dog food, toys and treats, food bowls and litter.
Pictured are Cassadaga Job Corps students who recently helped out at the Lakeshore Humane Society’s Adoption Center at 431 E. Chestnut St. in Dunkirk.
The students, all enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant program, were accompanied by five of their instructors. The young people had gathered the money to purchase the much appreciated items by approaching the staff of the Job Corps Academy who then pledged a monetary donation to support the students' efforts.
Nancy Letersky, a volunteer with the Lakeshore Humane Society, greeted the students and instructors and thanked them for the wonderful job they had done in helping the homeless animals of LHS.
A tour of the Adoption Center took place and students who wished could spend time visiting with the kittens, cats and dogs. The importance of controlling the homeless pet population through spaying/neutering was stressed as the tour progressed, as well as emphasizing the many things a responsible pet owner must do to help insure the health and happiness of their animal(s). The students' questions were welcomed concerning animal care and the operation of the LHS Adoption Center.
At the end of the tour, each student was presented a LHS T-shirt from Letersky to thank them for their care and concern for the animals of the shelter. Many expressed an interest in returning to visit with the animals again.
Lakeshore Humane Society is very grateful to the students involved in this project, and to the staff of the Cassadaga Job Corps for making the donations possible.
The students are Malekia Banton, Cheyanne Davis, Teresa Draves, Jacadi Duman, Amanda Garcia, Ceth Gilmore, Charles Jackson, Justin Santiago and Chris Withrow.
