Twenty years ago - 1993
The Rev. James A. Spiller was recently installed as pastor of the Portland Congregational Church and was welcomed to the community by more than 75 people attending the reception which followed. A 1993 graduate of the Buffalo School of the Bible, he was ordained on May 16. Portland Congregational Church is Rev. Spiller's first pastorate as it was for his father, the Rev. Dr. Gordon Spiller, who served as its pastor from the late 1960s until 1975. Dr. Spiller was present to see his son installed. The Rev. Spiller noted his father was 21 years of age when he started preaching. He is 22.
Thirty years ago - 1983
A group of Buffalo businessmen has contacted the United States Football League about the possibility of an expansion franchise in Buffalo for the 1985 season. The group apparently has the finances and intention to bring a USFL team to Buffalo. The league has already added six new teams for its second season next year.
Forty years ago - 1973
Liberty National Bank in the D & F Plaza, managed by John H. Buczek, has installed a new "around-the-clock" banking device. The machine allows 24-hour withdrawals of up to $100 a day and is operated by a charge card.
Fifty years ago - 1963
George E. Munschauer and Dr. Harry M. Taylor presented a movie series entitled, "Through the Years at Hanford Bay" to more than 100 Hanford Bay Community Club members and guests at a Hawaiian luau.
