As Labor Day approaches and summer is coming to an end, the season of car shows is also dwindling down. Car owners and enthusiasts flocked to American Legion Post 59 Friday evening for one of the final car cruises for the season.
The fifth annual American Legion Post 59 Car Cruise was held and all proceeds from the event will benefit the Chautauqua Veterans' Van. The event started five years ago when Carol Marx, event coordinator, wanted to do something for the post. Marx is a member of the post and the ladies' auxiliary and also belongs to a local car club.
"Five years ago I was asking the (legion) members what would be a good thing (as an event)," Marx said.

Carol Marx brought her 1968 Chevy Camaro Super Sport to the car cruise Friday evening.
The consensus was to host a car show. Friday's event featured over 60 cars of all makes and models. There was also a silent auction, door prizes, a 50/50 drawing and music by Sammy Slicker and the Black Jacks. The annual event, which is held the Friday before Labor Day, is growing each year with more cars.
"This is a bigger turnout then years before. The cars out back are parked on top of each other," said Marx. "Next year we'll have to go out in the street."
Susan Brooks, along with her husband Ken, of Dunkirk brought their 1965 Chevy Bel Air to the car show. Brooks said this is not the first car show they've attended and were at last year's event at the legion. The Brooks couple have had their car for more than three decades and attended Friday's event in support of veterans.
"We've had that car for 36 years," Susan said.
Ken has done all the mechanical work on the vehicle. The only thing Ken did not do on the car, according to Susan, was painting the exterior.
Marx wanted to thank everyone who attended and donated to the Veterans' Van and the event. She also wanted to thank everyone who helped out with the event in any capacity.
"I want to thank everyone who donated to the event. A special thank you to my friends who helped to pull this event together," Marx said.
