SILVER CREEK - Harold L. "Hal" Leavitt Jr., 57, of Alfred Drive, Silver Creek, NY passed away Sunday (Sept. 1, 2013) at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa., surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Buffalo, NY on March 2, 1956, the son of the late Harold Sr. and Gayle (Bruce) Leavitt.
A graduate of Silver Creek High School, Hal married Betty Michalski, who survives him, on May 22, 1982 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Silver Creek. He earned a degree in industrial engineering from ECC.
A general contractor, Hal owned and operated "Home Improvements with Hal." At the same time, he was employed as a shift supervisor by Berry Plastics and formerly as store manager of Regal Lumber, both in Dunkirk, NY.
He hosted a talk show on WDOE 1410 called "Your Home with Hal & Rob" and did volunteer work for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. Hal assisted in building the new addition for Harvest Chapel in Fredonia, NY, and also helped to remodel the Friendly Kitchen, where he helped to serve the daily meals.
He was a former board member of the Northern Chautauqua Catholic School, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and its Color Guard, and he also belonged to the Silver Creek Fire Department and Emergency Squad.
His hobbies included cabinet making, woodworking, cooking and golfing. Hal especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Hal is survived by two daughters, Shannon (Eric) Near of Dunkirk, NY and Rachel Leavitt of Silver Creek; a son, Justin Leavitt of Silver Creek; three brothers, Jeffrey (Dionne) Leavitt of Woodstock, Md., Steven (Lisa) Leavitt of Silver Creek and Christopher (Tammy) Leavitt of Plano, Texas; two sisters, Lynn Leavitt of Lexington, Ky., and Nikole Leavitt of Silver Creek; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are welcome to call at the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave., Silver Creek, NY today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church, 60 Buffalo St., Silver Creek, where there will be additional visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
