Janice Eggleston, 89, of Goodrich Street, Ripley, NY died at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013.
She was born in Jamestown, NY on June 15, 1924 to Merlyn J. Ireland and Gladys L. Clark Ireland.
Janice was a graduate of Lakewood High School and the Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City, NY.
She started her ministry as a Bible Club Missionary, teaching Bible Clubs with her husband in the schools of the Finger Lakes Region. She was a supportive pastor's wife and church pianist in three churches in New York State of which her husband was pastor: the Sempronius Baptist Church, Niobe Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Ripley of which she has remained an active member.
Janice worked as a toll collector on the New York State Thruway in Ripley and Westfield for more than 20 years, from 1967 until retirement. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle worker.
Most of all she loved the Lord Jesus Christ. She had a ministry of encouragement through letter writing, phone calls and personal contact. She used the gift of hospitality to make anyone feel welcome. She actively served through her local church as a pianist, teacher and in the Ladies Missionary Society.
Surviving are her four daughters, Sandra Heim (Neil, deceased) of Lima, Peru, Lynette Warner (Walter) of Port Crane, NY, Lois Harman (Ken) of Graham, NC and Anita Mencer (Tom) of Ripley, NY; two sons, Dr. Gary Eggleston (Cindy) of Westfield, NY and Rev. Donald Eggleston (Terri) of Ripley, NY. She also has 19 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Claude Eggleston, whom she married June 15, 1944 and who died April 19, 2013. She also was preceded in death by her two brothers, Jarvis Ireland and James Ireland.
Visiting hours will be Friday, Sept. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ripley. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ripley.
