SPRINGVILLE - The Marauders jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Springville, but were unable to hold on as Springville defeated Dunkirk 7-6 Friday in a CCAA non-league contest on a rain-soaked field.
In the first quarter, Dunkirk managed to put themselves in good scoring position after a 58-yard punt return by Richard Pickens took the Marauders down to Springville's 2-yard line. Nick Bomasuto punched it in from the two to give Dunkirk a 6-0 lead.
Springville regained the lead in the second quarter after a botched exchange between Dunkirk's quarteback and center left Springville at the Dunkirk 8-yard line.
With less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, Justin Dewitt scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown to give Springville a 7-6 lead, which proved to be the game-winning score.
"We fumbled the ball four times and lost three of them," said Dunkirk head coach Tim Majka. "That's two weeks in a row where we've shot ourselves in the foot."
Special teams and solid defense highlighted the Marauders' evening. Dunkirk managed a 58-yard punt return and a 30-yard kick return. but their offense couldn't manage to hold onto the ball long enough to sustain a scoring drive of any substance.
"We have to keep working hard and eventually we'll fix the mistakes," Majka said. "The effort is there 100 percent. Every kid gives it their all. There was no lack of effort (Friday), just a series of unfortunate events."
Dunkirk's Josh Goodwin was 1-3 passing for 27 yards. Bomasuto led the Marauder rushing attack with 62 yards on 10 carries including the opening touchdown.
Lucas Lugen led Dunkirk's defense with 10 tackles and two sacks. Bomasuto added 12 tackles in the loss.
Devin White-Kearns had 45 yards passing and an interception for Springville while Tyler Conklin added 45 yards on the ground. Andrew Suffoletto had six tackles for Springville.
