Last week, our region celebrated the grand opening of the Grape Discovery Center on the outskirts of Westfield. This week the celebration of the vine continues with the Festival of Grapes.
In its 46th edition, the festival unofficially opened over the weekend with the Festival of Grapes pageant. On Thursday, however, opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. followed by the announcement of the pageant winners, the grape grower of the year and the ever-popular grape stomping competition.
"The village is a very high supporter of the festival and I want to encourage residents from the whole area to come and enjoy themselves," said Nick Piccolo, Silver Creek mayor.
Events continue through Sunday with the grand parade at 1 p.m. concluding the event.
Chautauqua County is the grape capital of New York state, with more than 18,000 acres of grape vineyards. That is still something to celebrate.
