A wave of postcards have been circulating in the mail stating, "We are trying to reach you about your UNCLAIMED Reward! We are holding a reward of $100 in gift savings good at Wal-Mart or Target in your name."
The postcard then lists a phone number to call for details.
City of Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano has warned the public against the scam.
"Don't get sucked in by these things. Rip it up and throw it out. You'll just end up losing in the end," he said.
Karen Masurkiewicz of the U.S. Postal Service said in a phone interview on Thursday, "Generally if someone is concerned or they think something is not right or fraudulent, the best thing to do is contact the postal service."
The USPS has its own law enforcement agency, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, for matters of this nature and can be reached at 1-877-876-2455 or postalinspectors.uspis.gov.
"Check things out before you participate. There really is no free lunch. If it's too good to be true it probably is," Masurkiewicz said
Also, Walmart's website has helpful resources for these scams.
At www.walmart.com, the Privacy & Security link at the bottom of the website directs to a Fraud Alert page where scams such as these postcards can be reported.
