The Campus and Community Children's Center school age programs will sponsor a Lights On Afterschool rally on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fredonia Middle School. This is one of 8,000 rallies expected to occur around the nation that day.
The rally marks the 14th annual Lights On Afterschool celebration, organized by the Afterschool Alliance. On this day, speakers around the nation will call for expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one, and discuss the benefits of afterschool programs, including inspiring children to learn, keeping them safe in the sometimes perilous afternoon hours, and relieving working families of worries about their children's activities in the afternoon. At the event, parents and supporters will sign a petition that urges lawmakers not to deny or divert funding for afterschool programs.
Special guests participating in the Lights On Afterschool rally will include the mayor of Fredonia, Stephen Keefe. The event will spotlight the range of programming available at the Campus and Community Children's Center school age programs, including its academic support, physical fitness, enrichment, and multicultural activities, and SUNY Fredonia partnerships. Parents, supporters and community members are expected and encouraged to attend.
