SILVER CREEK - The Gowanda Lady Panthers ran to a first-place finish Monday in high school cross country action.
Gowanda scored 30 points while Silver Creek had 42 followed by Sherman 52 and Randolph was incomplete.
Sherman's Holly Eliason placed first as she finished the 3.1-mile course in 20:52. Gowanda's Colleen Steward placed second with a time of 21:18, ahead of Silver Creek's Emma Seiders at 21:20. Fourth place went to Gowanda's Hunter Samuelson at 21:21 and Silver Creek's Hannah Seiders placed fifth at 21:47. Gowanda's Sarah Grubbs (21:57) and Katelyn Jaroszewski (22:08) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Silver Creek's Rachel Radack placed eighth at 22:22 and teammate Sarah Adams placed 10th at 22:42.
Also for Silver Creek, Claire Castiglia placed 20th at 24:12 and Carol Pelz took 25th at 25:50.
For Gowanda, Lexi Latona took 11th at 23:06 and Nina Roman took 14th at 23:24.
In the boys' race, Sherman took first place with 40 points, followed by Silver Creek 48, Gowanda 48 and Randolph 87. Silver Creek won the tie-breaker for second place.
Gowanda's Matt Kruszka won the race with a time of 17:37 while teammate Ian Warrior placed third at 18:15. Matt Kruszka's brother, Joe, placed fourth at 18:21. Silver Creek's Caleb Makuch placed sixth at 19:12 while teammate Jack McAlevey placed eighth at 19:17. Also for Silver Creek, Jake Mullen placed 10th at 19:33.
The Black Knights were able to win the tie-breaker thanks to James Corbin (12th, 19:37), Tyler Stelkasa (13th, 19:41), Jakob McDaneld (14th, 19:53) and Ryan Ruia (17th, 20:13).
Also for Gowanda, Ben Myzel took 19th at 20:37 while Zach Bogardus took 22nd at 20:51.
"What a messy run the kids had," Silver Creek coach Mike Janisch said. "It was very, very muddy and water laden. The times were outstanding for such a truly messy day."
