BUFFALO - Morgan Genovese scored four goals to help her No. 8 Fredonia Lady Hillbillies defeat top seeded City Honors Lady Centaurs, 5-0, Friday in Class B-1 quarterfinal girls soccer action at Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium.
"Morgan did a great job (Friday)," Fredonia coach Cathy Cruver said. "She is an exceptional soccer player. Everyone thinks she is just a great goal scorer, but the thing is, she works so well within the team."
Fifteen minutes into the contest it was Emma Mackinnon who scored the opening goal on a direct kick for Fredonia.
Fredonia’s Morgan St. George (18) attempts to settle the ball ahead of City Honors' Arielle Nealy (27) during Friday’s Section 6 Class C girls high school soccer playoff game.
From there, Genovese took over, scoring the game's final four goals.
Genovese's first goal was assisted by Devon Kowalewski's pass which set up Genovese close to the net where she was able to cash in on the goal.
Genovese got her second goal at 30 minutes into the first half. Again it was Kowalewski with the assist, giving Fredonia a 3-0 lead going into the half.
It didn't take long for Genovese to make her mark in the second half. Two minutes in she scored her third goal after an Emily Valvo breakaway started the scoring opportunity that ended with Genovese finding the back of the net.
An unassisted goal by Genovese, her fourth of the day, sealed the deal for the Hillbillies.
"Everything is working exactly the way I want at the perfect time," Cruver said. "We are passing smart right now and have been working on our fundamentals all season. Right now it's just working."
Fredonia plays its next game in Amherst on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
