William J. Dengler, age 86, the founder of a Buffalo area funeral home, with Chautauqua County ties, died Friday, November 22, 2013 in Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Dengler, an Amherst resident, started the Dengler Funeral Homes, which was first located on Leroy Avenue in Buffalo.
A native of Silver Creek, Mr. Dengler moved to Buffalo with his family when he was young. He attended Blessed Trinity School and graduated from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in 1944.
Mr. Dengler was a Navy veteran of World War II, and based in Korea and China.
He married the former Joyce Smith, a Buffalo resident, in 1948. Also that year, he graduated from the Simmons School of Mortuary Science and in 1951 launched the funeral business, from which he retired in 1988.
Mr. Dengler served as president of the Erie Niagara Funeral Directors Association. He also served as commander of AMVETS Post 49 and President of the Buffalo Rotary Club.
He and his wife lived in Amherst while raising their family, then moved to the Buffalo waterfront for several years before returning to Amherst.
Mr. Dengler was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Eggertsville, his parish of many years. In recent years, he worshipped in St. Joseph's Cathedral, Buffalo.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, survivors include five sons, William J. Jr., (Cathy) of Snyder, NY., Daniel J.,(Colleen) of Hamburg, NY, David J (Alison) of Fredonia, NY, Dr. George S. (Mary) of Chicago, IL, and John S. (Jean) of Williamsville, NY; three daughters, Betsy Tilis (Late Dr. Larry), of Jacksonville, FL., Bonnie Kurosko (Dr. Walter) of Jacksonville, FL and Wendy Glauber (Eric) of Williamsville, NY; a sister, Joan Linde (Late Richard) of Swormville, NY.; and 19 grandchildren. Also survived by cousins: James (Joyce) of Fredonia, Kem (Lois) of Las Vegas, Lynn Cocker (Leon) of South Carolina, Sally Smith (Daniel) of Fredonia, N.Y., Sandra Gilbert of Hollywood, Fl., Ronald of Portland, NY, Terry (Barbara) of Burlington, VT., and Geraldine Roach (John) of Lancaster, NY.
Besides his parents, the late Roman and Mae Dengler, he is predeceased by a brother Richard, and a cousin Margaret "Peggy" Hawley (late Rodney) of Dallas, Texas.
