SOUTH DAYTON - Morgan Genovese scored 19 points and the Fredonia Hillbillies (2-0) used a big first quarter and third quarter to edge the Pine Valley Lady Panthers, 48-45, Thursday in non-league girls high school basketball.
Fredonia opened the game on a 14-6 run, but the home team used a 16-8 run to tie the score, 22-all at halftime.
The Lady Hillbillies outscored the Lady Panthers 15-12 in the third quarter.
"Fredonia came out flying," Pine Valley coach Tim Nobles said. "They were beating us up the court and getting second-chance shots. We finally caught up to them and played their speed."
Caitlyn Cybart pulled down 10 rebounds and Genovese grabbed nine rebounds for the winners. Kirsta Wheelock had four steals for the winners. The Lady Hillbillies shot 20 of 54 for 37 percent.
For Pine Valley, Alex Bentham led the way with 14 points. Kayla Mansfield pulled down 17 rebounds while Jessie Wilcox and Aaren Waterman each had three steals.
"We were down by seven in the third quarter," Nobles noted. "We went ahead and had a couple turnovers and they scored. We had opportunities at the end of the game, but couldn't get a good look."
Pine Valley travels to Brocton on Monday.
North Collins 45,
NORTH COLLINS - Arrika Bley scored 15 points to lift North Collins past Buffalo Academy of Science, 45-36.
The Lady Eagles took a 10-8 lead after the first quarter and increased the lead to 21-14 by halftime. They went on to outscore Buffalo Academy of Science, 24-22 in the second half to hold on for the victory.
