It is rally time once again in northern Chautauqua County.
Almost as absurd as this sounds, apparently the message of more than 2,200 residents attending a Public Service Commission hearing in the Williams Center at Fredonia State University was not heard by state leaders. Neither, then, was the more than four hours of comment for the repowering of the NRG Energy Inc. Dunkirk facility.
So, with Albany and the commission turning the deaf ear, residents are being asked one more time to show support for the plant on the Lake Erie waterfront. The event takes place at the Boardwalk Market from 11 a.m. to noon and will include state Sen. Catharine Young, Assemblyman Andrew Goodell, city Mayor Anthony J. Dolce as well as other dignitaries.
Weather conditions may not be ideal, but organizers are hoping the turnout hits four figures.
We must admit it is quite unfair to have to do this again after the tremendous show of support in July. But state leaders, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Public Service Commission have not budged since that hearing.
We, again, need numbers.
Please attend Saturday's rally for NRG, a community partner and the largest taxpayer in the county. Their repowering project - if approved - brings an economic impact of $1 billion to this area. That has never happened here before.
Also, before or after the rally, visit PowerUpWNY.org and become a member of the coalition.
New York state has never been one to react quickly. For that reason, your voice is needed - one more time.
