The lake-effect snowstorm has hit northern Chautauqua County much worse than the south. And, as of 4 p.m. today, a travel ban had been issued by the city of Dunkirk.
The snow warning is in effect through 4 a.m. Thursday and numerous accidents had been reported to area police departments.
The New York State Thruway has re-opened after being closed this afternoon in the eastbound lane from Dunkirk to Silver Creek and the westbound lane from Dunkirk to Hamburg, according to the Thruway website.
An accident on West Main Road involved two vehicles around 8 this morning.
The village of North Collins has also issued a travel ban.
The day began with areas north of Dunkirk hit hardest. Three area schools were closed due to snow and blowing snow. Those schools include Gowanda, Forestville and Silver Creek.
Silver Creek canceled its board of education meeting that was scheduled for today.
