SILVER CREEK - The Silver Creek Black Knights (6-2, 4-0) jumped out to an 18-7 lead after eight minutes of play and held on to eventually defeat the Maple Grove Red Dragons, 59-43, in a CCAA West I boys basketball matchup.
"We started out very well with 18 points in the first quarter," Silver Creek coach Rob Genco said. "We took care of the ball well. Kurt (Fischer) does a good job coaching (Maple Grove). They play smart, use half and full-court traps and they even threw some triangle at us. We didn't handle the press as well as we should have, but we still came away with a victory against a good opponent."
Billy Brooks once again led the way for Silver Creek with another triple-double. Brooks had 21 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocks in the win.
Andrew John turned in a solid all-around performance, scoring 13 points to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists.
Chance Gates added 19 points for the Black Knights who remained undefeated in league play with the victory.
"We still feel like we're behind," Genco said. "We're missing that swagger we should have, but overall, with everything going on, we are 6-2 and we're undefeated in the division. We've fought for every win."
Graham Soffel scored a team-high 12 points for Maple Grove.
The Black Knights will resume play on Jan. 3 at home versus Randolph in a non-league contest.
