Ross Howard Shickler, Ed.D., of Rancho Mirage, CA, passed away Dec. 10, 2013 at the age of 77. Ross was a loving father, husband, grandfather, mentor and friend to all.
Born in Buffalo, NY on March 2, 1936 to Howard W. Shickler and Dorothea (Rogers) Shickler, Ross graduated from Fredonia High School in 1954. While at Fredonia State University from 1956-58, he played varsity baseball and earned a B.S. and teaching credentials in science education. He taught at Silver Creek High School from 1958-60, coached the baseball team, and pursued his M.S.
In 1960, he relocated to Southern California, where he worked for the Long Beach Unified School District from 1960-2002. He initially taught science and coached baseball on Catalina Island at Avalon Jr. High/High School, and then transferred to Hill Jr. High School in the mid-1960's. He subsequently served as science teacher, Activities Director, and Assistant Principal at LB Polytechnic High School before accepting a position as Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. In 1983, while serving as Vice Principal at Lakewood High School, Ross earned his Ed.D. in Education Administration at USC. A position as Associate Director of Employee Relations followed. From 1985 to his retirement in 2002, Ross served as Principal at Rogers Jr. High School, Hamilton Middle School, and Jordan High School.
Ross co-authored Lake Trout: North America's Greatest Game Fish, with fellow angler, Ed Eveland, and was working on a second book at the time of his passing. Affiliations included the International Game Fish Association, National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, Outdoor Writers Association of America, Canada's National History Society, and the Catalina Island Conservancy. Ross's passions extended beyond education and fishing to photography, baseball, astronomy, and history.
He is survived by his wife, Merrie Lyn; brothers, Roger (Kathy) of Laguna Woods, CA and Robert of Ballwin, MO; three children, Michael (Renee) of Irvine, CA; Suzanne Grady of Murrieta, CA, and Matthew (Liz) of Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. Survivors also include grandchildren, Jessica, Joceline, Claire, Renee, Mary and Zayne and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
