SOUTH DAYTON - Pine Valley (5-1) used a 22-point third quarter to pull away from visiting Dunkirk (1-4) Friday night and came away with a 54-36 non-league girls basketball win.
"We shot well in the third quarter," Pine Valley head coach Tim Nobles said. "The first four minutes especially. And our defense throughout the game forced a lot of turnovers and we converted some of those in the third."
The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 10-8 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Marauders outscored Pine Valley 12-10 in the second to pull even 20-20 at halftime.
Then, the Lady Panthers put together their 22-point third quarter to take a 42-30 lead into the fourth quarter, where they outscored the Lady Marauders, 11-6, for the 53-36 final.
Alex Bentham led Pine Valley with a game-high 12 points while adding five steals. Also for the Lady Panthers, Jessie Wilcox had 11 points and four assists and Jamie Wilcox had a team-high nine rebounds. Kaitlyn Hoth chipped in nine points and eight steals in the win while Laural Killock had eight points and four assists.
For Dunkirk, Maddie Crandall had a team-high 11 points, adding six rebounds and three steals while Alexis Clark contributed seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Also for the Lady Marauders, Jessica Gifford had seven points.
