James J. Hassett, age 80, of Fredonia, NY, died Tuesday January 7, 2014 at his Fredonia home.
Born September 18, 1933 in Dunkirk, NY to the late Timothy and Anna Hofer Hassett, Jim was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy and the Goddard College. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He spent much of his four years in the service in both Korea and Japan. He was a Life Member of the 5th Air Force Association, the 49th Fighter Bomber Group, and the Air Force Association. He was also was a Life Member of the VFW, American Legion, and the DAV.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Jim was a steel salesman for Allegheny Ludlum and later for Universal Cyclops Steel Corp. Mr. Hassett was an inspector/expediter for various engineering companies, including Fluor and Ebasco Engineering Co., at retirement.
Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Grace Gestwicki Hassett; a daughter, Karen DuWaldt of Denver, CO; a son, Michael Hassett, grandchildren Alex and Anna DuWaldt, both of Denver, CO; and a brother, Charles (Gail) Hassett of Fredonia. He is also survived by 2 nephews and 1 niece.
Friends may call Friday 6-8:30 p.m. at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, N.Y., where prayers will be offered Saturday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Church at 10 a.m. Military Honors at Church will follow the Mass. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Church, or the Lakeshore Humane Society.
