The Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers' varsity hockey team won a pair of games this weekend, a 7-5 come-from-behind decision over Wilson-Newfane on Friday, at the Hyde Park Ice Pavilion, in Niagara Falls, and a 9-0 drubbing of Niagara Catholic on Sunday, at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
On Sunday, Kevin Ganey opened the scoring on an assist from Kyle Leysath in the first period. Then, in the second period, the Steelers poured it on, scoring six goals, two by Matt Sheridan and one each by Adam Dziduch, Mike Meredith, Nick Formanowicz and Connor Graves. Assists on the six goals were credited to Trevor Grupa, Tyler Rebmann, Bryce Gifford, Formanowicz and Matt Sheridan.
Scoring in the third period were Mike Meredith and Grupa while Ryan Meredith had two assists, Mike Johnson four assists and David Woloszyn one assist. Jared Hebner posted the shutout in net.
After falling behind 4-2 after two periods of play on Friday, Graves got the Steelers to within one goal of the lead on an assist by Leysath, before Johnson scored the game-tying goal on a feed from Matt Sheridan.
After Wilson-Newfane went up 5-4, Johnson again tied the game, this time on assists from Graves and Formanowicz, who put the Steelers up for good on an assist from Johnson.
The final goal of the night gave Johnson a hat trick, as he scored an empty netter to ice the game.
Hebner picked up the win in net while Formanowicz finished with two goals and an assist, Graves had two goals and an assist and Matt Sheridan had four assists.
