Gowanda cross country excels in classroom

January 15, 2014
The OBSERVER

The Gowanda girls cross country team was awarded the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Team award for the fall sports season. They had the highest academic team average out of 2,905 teams statewide that applied for the award. The teams average was 99.67 percent for the first marking period of 2013. Not only did these girls dominate in the classroom and on cross country courses across Western New York, but many did so while rehearsing for the school musical, casting for the school play, leading student government, volunteering throughout the community, working part-time and staying involved in many other ways. In addition, many of the girls balanced these responsibilities amidst the college applications and essays for their senior year. Team members winning scholar athlete award pins were Kelsey Delpriore, Sarah Grubbs, Elizabeth Omicioli, Krystal Haggart, Hunter Samuelson, Colleen Steward, and Lexi Latona. Also winning were Marcella Torres, Katelynn Jaroszewski, Nina Roman, and Cassidy Smith. The team was coached by Pete Palmer.
