The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (7-1, 5-0) pulled out a hard-fought victory Thursday with a 42-36 decision over the Falconer Lady Golden Falcons (3-6, 1-4) in a CCAA West I girls basketball matchup.
Sarah Cruver had a solid all-around performance for Fredonia with eight points, nine rebounds and six steals. Morgan Genovese added nine points and six rebounds while Kirsta Wheelock pulled down seven rebounds in the win.
Falconer's Alyssa Brooks scored a game-high 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
"It was a very competitive game," Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. "Falconer is a very athletic team and they made some good shots. I'm very happy with the way the girls responded. Different players stepped in for us. Cruver had the best game of her career. She had six points in the third and that was the spark for us.
"It was a great team win," Zirkle added. "They matched up really well with us athletically. Our defense needs to improve as we're trying to get ready for the playoffs, but I'm really proud of how we played (yesterday)."
Fredonia's next two games are makeup games with the first being Saturday at Falconer and the second on Tuesday at home against Frewsburg.
Olean 49, Dunkirk 38
The Dunkirk Lady Marauders (1-6) could not rebound from a poor start as they fell to the Olean Lady Huskies (3-7), 49-38, Thursday in CCAA West I girls high school basketball.
"We came out in the first three minutes and missed three uncontested layups and two free throws," Dunkirk coach Sarah Burnett lamented. "Instead of being up 12-2 we were down 12-4. We should have had the momentum, but instead had to play from behind."
Due to the slow start, Olean took a 17-8 lead after the opening eight minutes and maintained a 27-18 edge at intermission.
In the second half, the Lady Huskies outscored Dunkirk just 22-20 to hold on for the victory.
The Lady Marauders also had several turnovers throughout the game as Olean's Shantel Singleton and Destiny Portlow combined for 11 steals.
"We really didn't have too many troubles breaking their press," Burnett said. "But once we did, we were impatient and made silly mistakes. They were mainly self-induced turnovers."
Maddie Crandall and Sydney Charles led Dunkirk's offense with nine points each. Charles added five rebounds and Crandall had three steals. Sarah Hanlon had four steals of her own in a losing effort.
Olean's Courtney Martin pulled down 12 rebounds to go with her 10 points while the offense was led by Rachel Painter's 14 points.
Silver Creek 51, Southwestern 46
LAKEWOOD - Trailing by 10 points going into the final quarter, the Silver Creek Black Knights (7-2, 3-2) made a crucial change on defense.
That change tipped the scales in the final period, took the game to overtime and ultimately it was the Black Knights who prevailed with a 51-46 victory over the Southwestern Lady Trojans (5-4, 3-3) in a CCAA West I girls basketball contest Thursday.
Southwestern's Alex Sullivan dominated the Black Knights with 20 points through three quarters of play. But that's when Silver Creek coach Tammy Rice made the change to man-to-man defense and put Sarah Adams on the red-hot Sullivan. Adams, who was called up from the jayvee squad for the game, held Sullivan scoreless throughout the fourth quarter and overtime to help Silver Creek pick up a hard-fought victory.
"It was (Adams') first varsity game and she played amazing defense," Rice said. "She gave (Sullivan) nothing. And she also hit a key 3-pointer in overtime. After a tough loss to Falconer on Tuesday, I'm really proud of how the team dug deep for this one."
Jordan Brooks led the Black Knights with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Brooks scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half and overtime to help the team to victory.
"Emily Wuebvolt did a great job on Brooks," Rice said. "She has great size and is one of the best defensive centers in the league. In the second half, Jade Lewis really picked up the pace and penetrated more. That really helped Brooks come alive in the second half."
Lewis had 18 points in the win while Cora Utegg pulled down six rebounds for the Black Knights.
Sullivan's 20 points, including two 3-pointers, led the Lady Trojans while Wuebvolt contributed 11 points in the loss.
