Here are some of the best - and worst - of the week:
GOOD SAVE - We want to applaud the Lily Dale Fire Department for its quick and careful actions this past week. On Monday, a fire broke out on the third floor of the Maplewood Hotel. Volunteer firefighters quickly responded to the scene, saving the historic building. Also, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire without damaging the facility, even making sure they didn't go overboard with water damages.
MEDICAL VAN - Seneca Nation community members who receive services from the Seneca Nation Health System's Lionel R. John Health Center have a new ride available to them. On Tuesday, a full-size van was donated by JC Seneca Foundation. The van will transport community members for dialysis and other medical appointments.
VILLAGE HISTORIAN - Cassadaga historian John Sipos recently made a "Best of December in Cassadaga" display for the village board, which will be hanged in the village hall. Sipos, like many village historians, deserves applause. He always makes sure the OBSERVER and Post-Journal receive news releases about items happening in the local community. Sipos is a "best" in Cassadaga.
FORESTVILLE LOAN - Forestville village officials got a sticker shock this past week, when they learned they must pay off a $247,000 loan. In 2009 the village borrowed the money to demolish a dangerous building on Main Street. After borrowing the money, that administration did not make any efforts to make payments on the loan. Now five years later after that board has moved on, the current administration is left to take care of this debt. So far only $3,000 in payments have been made. The bill due is more than 50 percent of the village's entire budget! You have to wonder what was the administration and its former lawyer thinking, not paying this bill.
