Guest speaker was Sherri Mason, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at SUNY Fredonia. She conducted the first-ever survey of plastic pollution of the Great Lakes, sailing on the Flagship Niagara, an Erie-based replica of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's victorious Battle of Lake Erie vessel from the War of 1812. She gave a history of the use of plastics from its first uses as billiard balls and film to the present day, how its lightweight and durability are not only its advantages, but part of the pollution problem. Every piece of plastic is man-made, and the biggest problem is how through lake organisms it can make its way into the human food chain. Dr. Mason suggested ways to cut down on use of plastic items and bags, and also fielded questions from those in attendance.
The next meeting of the Club Association will be held at the Dom Polski Club in Dunkirk, on Sunday, Feb.. 23 at 10:30 a.m.
Members of all clubs are invited to attend.
