PERRYSBURG - Bergal Charlie Stiles, 69, a retired therapy aide for NYS Dept. of Mental Health, where he worked for 24 years, died Thursday, January 30, 2014 at his home on California Avenue in Perrysburg, NY surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in a coal miner's shack in Ridgeview Bolivar, PA on November 15, 1944, the son of the late Elmer and Lurana (Mitchell) Stiles.
Bergal worked the family farm from 1957-1962 in Pine Valley, So. Dayton, NY. He also worked under DDSO services for NYS. He served in the Marines during the Vietnam Era having attained the rank of Sergeant (E5). Enlisting on January 28, 1966 at Buffalo, NY discharged on July 15, 1968 at Charleston, NC. Bergal was in the US Marine Corps serving in the Cuban Blockade, Panama Canal Zone, Mediterranean 6th Fleet and Military Police at the Quarters Battalion, Comptroller Color & honor station based at Quantico VA. He also made meritorious Service at Quantico. Then transferred to 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Air Wing, DaNang, Vietnam. In 1967 promoted to advisor to NCO Club formerly known as the Kangaroo Club. He received many awards for services performed during his military career.
A Life member of the All American 82nd Airborne, VFW Post 5007, and the Perrysburg Conservation Club. Exempt member of Helmuth Fire Dept. and a member of the UMC in South Dayton serving as trustee.
Bergal also coached the Gernatt Little League Baseball team for 3 years and the Midget Jets Football team for 4 years in Gowanda.
He is survived by two sons, Jeffery A. (Krista) Stiles, C. Matthew (Cheryl Trank) Stiles; two daughters, Tammy D. (David) Ortel, Michelle K. (Jeffery Schneider) Wypij; a sister, Charlene (Chuck) Stankey; a close family friend, Ronald (Rita) Chimino. His grandchildren: Dustin Stiles, Cheyenne Stiles, Felicia Stiles, Colyn Stiles, Dalton Moore, Samantha Trank, Katie Trank, Joshua Bartholomew, Shelbi L. Bartholomew, Elizabeth Ortel, Matthew Ortel, Jeremy Thuman, Joseph Thuman, Lynn Mackey, Michael Chimino (special friend), Eric Chimino (special friend), Sierra Wypij, Jared Wypij, Terrance Wypij (friend), Isabelle Wypij, Kim and John Thuman (sister-in-law), Joseph and Michele Smith (brother-in- law), and five great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy E. Stiles, and his mother & father-in-law, Clarence & Faye (Stabenau) Smith.
Visitation will be held at Hills Funeral Chapel, 255 Aldrich Street, Gowanda, NY. on Tuesday from 7-9 P.M.
The family suggests memorials to So. Dayton United Methodist Church, Pine St., South Dayton NY 14138.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at South Dayton United Methodist Church. Pastor Bethany Ruane, retired pastor of South Dayton United Methodist Church, will be officiating.
The South Dayton American Legion and the Pine Valley VFW will be conducting military honors.
