MAYVILLE - Bitter cold temperatures did nothing to cool down the fun experienced by more than 100 area Cub Scouts.
On Saturday, the Boy Scouts of America's annual Cub Winter Fun Day for local Scouts was held at Camp Merz, where Scouts from 10 of the 26 Two Lakes District packs were in attendance.
With a long standing tradition that spans several decades, the Cub Winter Fun Day serves as an opportunity for area Cub Scouts from throughout the Two Lakes District to gather and play winter-themed games. According to Wayne Schuver, senior district executive for the Two Lakes District, the games are not structured for the purpose of competition, but rather to foster a fun, teamwork-driven atmosphere.

"For Cub Scouts, it's just a fun day," Schuver said. "There are opportunities for rank advancement in their book, such as compass work and a nature hike that has some identification that will go toward their wolf and merit book. So, we kind of work those things into it but, for the most part, it's about having fun. And if we can add in a little Scouting overtone to having fun, we'll go from there."
After the opening ceremony to welcome visiting Scouts and their parents, the packs were split up into groups to participate in the eight activity stations made available. The activities and games for this year's fun day included kick ball, snowball throw distance, "take a hike," ring the snowman, a knot workshop, snow surprise, snowball throw accuracy and "Oh no! Where am I?"
Schuver said all the stations were supervised by Scouts and leaders of Troop 129 from Falconer, which he said was beneficial for providing a mentorship opportunity between Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. The visiting packs included: Pack 115, 153 and 187 from Jamestown; Pack 103 from Randolph; Pack 126 from Mayville; Pack 138 from Frewsburg; Pack 173 from Falconer; Pack 177 from Celoron; Pack 267 from Fredonia; and Pack 288 from Cattaraugus.
Schuver said the Two Lakes District contains 26 total packs, and geographically encompasses Chautauqua County as well as the Cattaraugus County region located west of Route 219. The Cub Winter Fun Day is held at Camp Merz every year.
"We could have used a few more degrees this year but, for the most part, this is a great facility to have it every year. We always get snow in Mayville," Schuver said.
