The Fredonia State women's swimming and diving team will be competing in the State University of New York (SUNYAC) Championships today at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo. The team finished third a year ago, and lost six solid seniors to graduation. However, head coach Arthur Wang feels this team can repeat last year's finish.
The strength of the squad is the divers. For the past eight years, a Fredonia State athlete has earned the Female Diver of the Meet award. Entering today's action, last year's winner, Ashley Keller, is the No. 1 seed off both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Katelyn Haley bolsters the lineup as the second seed on the 3-meter board and the third seed on the 1-meter board.
This year's team may not have the top seeds as last year's, but is very consistent across the board.
Wang points to a trio of swimmers he expects will score well for the Devils.
Larissa Dobson is the second seed in the 200-yard breast stroke and the fifth seed in the 100 breaststroke.
Stephanie Rosa has had a strong showing in the backstroke. She is ranked fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100.
Sam Rokos is in the top eight in three events, all freestyles. She is fourth in the 200, seventh in the 100 and eighth in the 500.
The meet kicks off with the 200 freestyle relay prelims this morning.
