SILVER CREEK Silver Creek avoided disaster once again early this morning.
According to Mayor Nick Piccolo, ice began to jam near the village ball park around 12:30 a.m. There was also bad news when the county equipment broke down around 10:30 p.m. Piccolo said it could not be fixed until morning.
By 2:30 a.m., the water had begun to rise near Oliver, Rix and Dana places. Piccolo said these residents were notified of the problem and cars were moved as a precaution.
Crews worked overnight and during the morning to avert flooding problems in Silver Creek late Thursday and this morning.
Piccolo said they called contractor George Ortolano to operate the village's equipment to try to clear the ice jam near the ball park. He said they thought water and ice were moving well in the creek by 6 a.m., but decided to call Ortolano back to clear out the mouth of Walnut Creek an hour later.
Piccolo reported as much as 2.5 feet of flooding at the intersection of Lincoln and Montgomery and water on Central Avenue, Oliver, Rix and Dana places. He said by 8:30 a.m. both Walnut and Silver creeks were running smoothly and the threat had passed.
