Gertrude Unbehaun, 98, of Dunkirk died peacefully Friday morning (Feb. 21, 2014) at the Villages Hospice Center in Florida.
She was born August 5, 1915 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Henry and Alice (Hayes) Brooks.
Gertrude graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1934. She worked as a bookkeeper for 30 years at Jayne's, retiring in 1967.
A devoted parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R.C. Church, she was a member of the Parish Council and the Ladies Guild. She worked bingo and was a volunteer for Catholic Charities. She also had been a member of the St. Mary's and Cardinal Mindszenty Mother's clubs.
Gertrude loved to knit, travel, play cards and take frequent trips to the casino. She spent the last year of her life in Florida, living with her daughter and son-in-law.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann (Thomas) Murtaugh of Florida; a niece, Priscilla Hammond of San Antonio, Texas; a nephew, Frederick Niedermeyer of Williamsville; four grandchildren, Mary Ludemann, Margaret Strauser, Kathleen Murtaugh and Lauren Murtaugh; great nephew, John Niedermeyer; and five great grandchildren, Sara, Tho-mas, Emma, Grey and Ally.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Unbehaun; two sisters, Grace Niedermeyer and Mary Brooks; and a great grand-daughter, Lauren Ludemann.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Calling hours will be held Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
