BROCTON - Brocton Streets Department Superintendent Tom Allen gave a report to the village leaders Wednesday that all village sidewalks were recently looked at and measured in hopes of Brocton taking part in a grant program to have all Brocton sidewalks replaced.
"I did measure all of the sidewalks, and we would be looking at approximately $60,000 for material, and you could probably double that amount for labor costs. I didn't look at a potential bike path, but I think we could probably meet that goal if we looked at some more sidewalk options," Allen said.
The grant program, which he and Trustee Gary Planty have been looking into since attending a recent workshop, would require an upfront replacement of the sidewalks, which the village would then be reimbursed for solving an ongoing issue of the current system which allows for only a few sidewalk pieces to be replaced each season.
Planty agreed to reach out to town of Portland leaders to see what other sidewalk placements could be looked at, as well as Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corporation representatives to help the village get off the ground with the program.
"It would basically cover every sidewalk in Brocton if we were to take part in this," added Allen.
In other matters, the board authorized bids to be advertised for the sale of timber taken down by the Brocton Electric Department this season. All bids will be due May 7 by 4 p.m. to the village clerk's office, and will be opened during the May 7 board meeting. Mayor Dave Hazelton noted that the timber is currently at the village highway barn and the qualified bidder would need to have it removed by May 21.
The board also approved a resolution to rescind the resignation letter of office staff member Sonia Luszcak, who will remain employed with the village clerk's office. Mayor Hazelton also welcomed back newly elected trustee Bryan Woleben to the board.
Woleben thanked the mayor and added, "I'm glad to be back here and look forward to maintaining and helping the village to move forward."
Trustees approved a measure Wednesday to put a $58,000 down payment on a 2015 Freightliner dump truck with a wing and snow plow attachment, which will replace a 30-year-old vehicle currently utilized by the village.
The down payment on the $158,000 truck, according to Allen, "Will help us control the annual cost of the vehicle and the cost falls under the low bid requirement under county bid specifications."
In other matters, village leaders read aloud and adopted a series of resolutions as part of the annual organization of village government and procurement policy. Remaining unchanged, except for the mayor's recommendations for committee assignments with the addition of Trustee Woleben to the board, the regular meeting schedule for the board of trustees was reestablished as follows: meetings will be held the first and third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m., with the exception of the months of June, July and August, during which only the third Wednesday will be set as a meeting night, at the mayor's discretion.
Trustees also resolved to reappoint Cynthia Ferguson as the Youth Recreation Director for Brocton.
Dog Control Officer Clarence Grover was granted permission by the board to host an annual rabies clinic at the Brocton Fire Department. A well-attended annual event, the rabies clinic exact date and time will be announced at a later date.
The board will reconvene on May 7 starting with a 6:30 p.m. public hearing for water and sewer rate increases, and the regular meeting at 7 p.m. to follow.
