SALAMANCA - Matt Civilette showed he is one of the top jumpers around Friday afternoon at the Super 8 track and field meet.
The top eight athletes in each running and field event from Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties came together Friday. Civilette took first place in the triple jump and the long jump. Seeded first in the triple jump, he lived up to the hype with a leap of 42-feet-6 inches. In the long jump, Civilette was seeded third and won the event with a jump of 18-10.
"They claim this is the best of best," Fredonia coach Bob Ball said. "Matt has proven over the last couple years, he is tops in the three counties. He had a really good night."
Teammate Matt McCarthy was seeded fourth in the 200-meters, and he placed third with a time of 23.66. In the 100, he was seeded eighth, but finished in fourth place with a time of 11.72.
"I was really pleased with the results," Ball said. "Matt being a senior, it's nice to see him continue his championship ways. Matt being a junior, we want him to go back and improve on that next year."
As for the girls, the 4x800 relay team of Ally Cobb, Emily Wan, Claire O'Brien and Lauren Reyda placed second with a time of 10:05.
"They knocked a lot off of that," Fredonia coach Mike Marshall said. "I think it took a lot out of some of the girls to knock that much time off and compete in three or four events after that."
Devin Kowalewski placed fourth in the 100 hurdles at 16.3, eighth in the long jump at 14-5 and sixth in the triple jump at 30-7.
Reyda took fifth in the 3,000 (11:45), sixth in the 1,500 (5:18) and ninth in the 800 (2:33). Gwen Stokes placed third in high jump at 4-11 and sixth in the 3,000 at 11:51. Deidra Osula took third in the 200 at 27.7 and fifth in 100 at 13.6.
Wan took seventh in the 1,500 at 5:31 and Ally Cobb placed fourth in the 400 at 1:12.
"I gave them a hard workout yesterday thinking this was an event to go see how you stack up against other people," Marshall said. "Hopefully they get some good training time now we are down to one meet a week. Girls can prepare and get ready."
Now Fredonia gets ready for the County meet next weekend at Dunkirk High School.
