Six local teams are still alive in the Section 6 baseball playoffs while just three softball teams will have the chance to play for a Sectional title.
In Class B-1 semifinal action today, No. 2 Fredonia hosts No. 6 Medina while No. 1 Gowanda hosts No. 5 Southwestern in a Class B-2 matchup. A win by the Hillbillies will pit them against either No. 5 Olean or No. 1 City Honors on Saturday at Diethrick Park, in Jamestown, at 4 p.m. A win by the Panthers would send them to the Class B-2 title game on Saturday at 7 p.m., at Diethrick Park against either No. 7 Cleveland Hill or No. 6 JFK.
Westfield, the top seed in Class C, will host playoff nemesis Frewsburg at 5 p.m. today. The No. 1 Wolverines and No. 4 Bears met in last year's Class C semifinal as well, with Westfield winning and advancing to the title game. A win this year by Westfield would send them back to Diethrick Park where they could see either No. 3 Chautauqua Lake or No. 2 Cassadaga Valley, at 1 p.m.
Forestville’s Alisha Szumigala, left, and Fredonia’s Weston Ley, right, will look to pitch their teams into the Sectional finals. Szumigala, and the rest of the No. 3 Lady Hornets will square off against No. 2 Pine Valley on Friday, in South Dayton. Ley, and his No. 2 Hillbillies will host No. 6 Medina in a Class B-1 semifinal today at the Fredonia High School field on Route 60.
In Class D action, No. 1 Pine Valley hosts No. 5 Brocton while No. 2 North Collins hosts No. 3 Ellicottville. The winners will square off in the Sectional final on Saturday, at Diethrick Park, at 10 a.m.
On Friday, in Class D games, No. 4 Brocton travels to take on No. 1 Panama while NO. 2 Pine Valley hosts No. 3 Forestville in a rematch of last year's Sectional final. The Lady Panthers won that game over the higher-seeded Lady Hornets. The Class D final is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, at Jamestown High School, at 4:45 p.m.
