Helen Carlson, 90, of Dunkirk died Thursday evening (May 29, 2014) at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo.
She was born Aug. 11, 1923 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Carl and Aina (Sivenius) Carlson.
Miss Carlson had been employed as a fourth-grade teacher in Lansing, NY for 36 years. She served as past president of the Retired Teachers Association.
She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dunkirk.
An avid traveler, she traveled to Hawaii, where she lived for a time, and returned to her roots in Finland.
Survivors include a brother, Earl (Gloria) Carlson of Fredonia; a sister, Aina (James) Youhill of Salinas, Calif.; two nephews, James S. Carlson of Dunkirk and Bryce Carlson of New York; and nine nieces, Kim (Peter) Zielinski, Carol (David) Bleck and Lisa (Thomas) Hawk, all of Fredonia; Barb Gilmour of Oregon, Donna (Steven) Williamson of Ohio, Susan (Michael) Kassel of Virginia, Sylvia (James) Jarius of Georgia, Marilyn (Allen) Cook of Tennessee and Ardyce Carlson of Pennsylvania.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her special cousin, Helge Carlson; four brothers, Carl A., Norman, Bertel and George Carlson; a sister, Jeanette (Roger) Skinner; a nephew, William Youhill; and four sisters-in-law, June, Bertilla, Marjorie and Jean Carlson.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial services will be held on June 28 at 3 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Dunkirk.
