Florence V. Fijal, 89, of Dunkirk passed away June 2, 2014 at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Dunkirk on Nov. 12, 1924, the daughter of the late Thaddeus and Wanda (Kulpa) Fijal.
Florence graduated from Villa Maria Academy in 1943, received her bachelor of arts degree from Mt. St. Joseph's Teachers College and completed her master's degree at Medaille College.
She became known as Sister Mary Audrey when she entered the Felician Order of Sisters. For more than 50 years, she taught elementary education in Western New York in various Catholic schools in the Diocese of Buffalo. Her last six years of teaching were completed at St. Hyacinth (now Blessed Mary Angela) Parish.
Florence left the convent in 1995 to care for her mother who was quite ill at the time.
Besides her father, who died in 1975 and her mother (1997), she was preceded in death by her younger sister, Virginia, as well as an infant brother Thaddeus and infant twin sisters Anna and Wanda.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are by the Newman Funeral Home Inc.
