Russell C. Coles, formerly of Cattaraugus, died on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at the age of 82.
He was born on May 1, 1932, the son of Michael, Sr., and Ella (Allan) Coles in Buffalo.
He graduated from Gowanda High School in 1950 and eventually attended the University of Buffalo and Fredonia State.
Mr. Coles was a Navy Corpsman attached to the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and continued his service in the Army Reserves, retiring in April 1973 with the rank of Sergeant Major E9.
Mr. Coles worked as a Radiology Technician at Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Gowanda for 30 years and retired from the US Postal Service as a rural letter carrier after 26 years of service. He was actively involved in the Cattaraugus community for many years in the roles of President of the Cattaraugus Ambulance Service, Trustee for the Cattaraugus Village Board, County Commander of the American Legion - Little Valley Post #531, a member of the VFW - Little Valley Post #8734, a member of Clinton F. Page - Berean Masonic Lodge #620 and a Trustee and Treasurer of St. John's United Church of Christ. Mr. Coles also served as the ECHO site manager in Cattaraugus for several years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy (Frank) Coles, his brother, Michael Cole, Jr., and his sister, Edna (Coles) Arnold.
Mr. Coles is survived by his wife, Alma (Giblin) Coles of Brooksville, FL; daughters Cynthia (Daniel) Minner of Cattaraugus, Amy (James) Tritt of Farmington Hills, MI, Lisa (Kirk Liskow) Coles of Little Valley; grandsons Daniel (Laura Kohler) Minner II of Ellicottville, Christopher Perkins (Tara Westfall) of Cattaraugus, Cole Tritt of Farmington Hills, MI; granddaughters Jennifer (Jon) Mesch of East Otto, Elizabeth (Brendon) Harvey of Otto, MacKenzie Tritt of Farmington Hills, MI; great grandchildren Calysta Harvey, Carter Harvey, Sophia Mesch and stepdaughters Laura Achtziger of Derby, Marti (David) Becony of Springville and Donna Raditic, DVM, Kentucky.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Hills Funeral Chapel, 55 Main Street, Cattaraugus, NY, 14719.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, 28 Ellicott Street, Cattaraugus, NY, 14719. Rev. Harlan West will officiate and a luncheon will follow. Burial will be at Liberty Park Cemetery in Cattaraugus immediately following the service.
