A power surge in the city of Dunkirk tripped Alstar Ambulance’s fire alarm system to sound Thursday afternoon, according to the Dunkirk Fire Department. Firefighters responded to the false alarm around 5 p.m. and spent about 15 minutes on the scene. Due to the power surge, a part of the city experienced a power outage around the same time spanning from Main Street to Central Avenue and Fifth Street to Ice Cream Drive. The fire department confirmed it was caused by a squirrel that gnawed a wire on a transformer at the corner of Marsden Street and Park Avenue. Power was restored to area residents around 10 p.m.
