A Gowanda native is earning national recognition for his work with a Broadway musical. Michael Murphy, the managing director for the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, Calif., received four Tony Awards at this year's 68th annual awards.
"A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" earned four Tony awards, including best musical, best book of a musical, best costume design of a musical and best direction of a musical. The musical was performed at the Old Globe Theatre where it was a co-production with another theater. As managing director, it was Murphy's job to decide what shows the theater will feature. He commended the show as being funny, witty and well written.
The musical, directed by Darko Tresnjak, is about a man from a noble family who finds out he is in the running to be the family's heir to the throne. The man, Monty Navarro, has one problem: seven other relatives in front of him in line for the same position. Navarro, who is played by the same actor as the other seven relatives, decides to murder his way to the throne by killing off those ahead of him.

"We're honored to add a Tony Award for Best Musical to the long list of esteemed awards and honors that the Globe has received over its incredible history," Murphy said in a press release. "It is particularly gratifying that this extraordinary musical was created by and for the regional theatre and has now become the toast of Broadway - which is a testament to the genius, skill and talent of our artists and craftspeople."
Murphy attended the award show in New York City in early June. He described, in a phone interview with the OBSERVER, the experience as being a lot of fun and was a "very entertaining show." Some years Murphy said he can predict the winners but this year was hard.
"(The awards) were very thrilling. It was a tight competition - I had no idea what shows were going to win. It was hard to tell," he said.
This was not the first time Murphy has attended the award show but this is the first time he has won. The musical was nominated for 10 awards this year. He said this year's show as a lot of fun with great people and was a great chance to see award-winning performances. While this is Murphy's first win, the Old Globe has won several awards in the past.
Currently the show is performing on Broadway in New York City only. Murphy said within a few years the show will probably tour nationally. For more information on the musical, visit www.agentlemansguidebroadway.com. For more information on the Old Globe, visit www.theoldglobe.org.
