JAMESTOWN - Four suspects are in custody and as many as three others are wanted in connection to a gunfire exchange that occurred early Tuesday morning with Jamestown Police.
According to Captain Robert F. Samuelson, division commander of the Jamestown Police Department, the incident occurred just after 3 a.m., when officers responded to a 188 Falconer St. residence for a reported fight.
Inside, the officers observed three men escaping out of a window, the last of whom fired a shot at an officer before fleeing with the other two in a southern direction behind the houses on Stowe Street.
The police officer, who was uninjured, returned fire. It is unclear whether any of the suspects were injured.
Police say the incident involved drugs.
Two other men were found hiding inside the residence by police. Both were investigated and found to be involved with the other wanted suspects, and charged with first-degree burglary for their role in the home invasion.
A large caliber handgun was also found outside the residence. It is believed to be the weapon used to fire at police.
Later Tuesday, after receiving several reports, the JPD - with the assistance of the Lakewood-Busti and Ellicott police departments, as well as the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police - was able to locate two individuals who matched suspect descriptions walking on the railroad tracks west of Jamestown.
Both were taken into custody as they attempted to flee from officers in the East Terrace Avenue area near Burtis Bay.
They are being held on parole violations and as persons of interest in the home invasion.
Police are still looking for as many as three additional suspects involved in the incident and one who may be injured as a result of the gunfire exchange with police.
Anyone who has information on this or the whereabouts of any of the participants is asked to contact the Jamestown Police at 483-7357 or leave an anonymous tip at 483-8477 (Tips).
