Stewart Edward Arters, 96 years old, of Webster Road, Fredonia, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday evening, July 17, 2014 at Absolut of Westfield after a brief illness.
Stewart was born on January 20, 1918 in Gettysburg, Pa., to the late George and Elinor Stevens Arters. He has been a resident of this area most of his life.
Stewart served his country for three-and-a-half years during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. Upon returning home from the war, he attended Syracuse University studying Forestry. Stewart was a retired steelworker from Specialty Metals of Dunkirk. He also attended Northeast Assembly of God Church in Northeast, Pa., and Harvest Chapel of Fredonia, N.Y.
Stewart was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and he also loved to cook and was a skilled carpenter.
He is survived by his children: Doug (Alba) Arters of Gerry; Beverly Spayde of Springfield, Missouri; Cheryl (Cleatis) Jeffcoat of Marlow, Oklahoma; Steven Arters of Fredonia; Karen (Peter) Gennuso of Athens, Georgia; David Arters and Susan Kay Arters, both of Fredonia; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Kathryn Arters, who passed away on June 1, 2012, and one brother, Warren Arters.
Friends are invited to call at the Morse Funeral Home, 51 Highland Ave. in Brocton, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014. Funeral services will take place on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church, 20 Washington St. in Westfield. The Rev. Gerald Olshevski will officiate. Full Military Honors will be provided by The American Legion John W. Dill Post 434 of Brocton. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
