Opportunity for WACS students

Westfield Academy and Central school had 17 students participate in a research poster symposium at the University at Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. The students were Emily Archer, Jason Babcock, Nick Kuhn, Justice Kuhn, Cameron Abbey-Mott, Brenna Culbreth, Darian Switzer, Emily Beers, Daisy-Marie Schultz, Brooke Bennett, Jacob Gray, Bryce Gatto, Vincent Noble, Dan McMurray, Allyssa Catalano, Ashley Poletto and Ariel Fuentes. They presented nine posters about genes of a bacteria Kytocoocus sendentarius. Some of these students are pictured with the professionals who assisted them. The professionals are pictured on the far right: Back row: Lon Knappenberger and Stephen T. Koury. Middle row: Rama Dey-Rao and Norma Nowak. The Western New York Genetics in Research Partnership is developing an ongoing partnership with schools across a 14-county region in western New York that will serve as a pipeline for teacher and student recruitment, training and mentorship in STEM, (science, technology, engineering and math) with a particular focus on basic genome analysis and bioinformatics in a strategies project.
