Westfield Academy and Central school had 17 students participate in a research poster symposium at the University at Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. The students were Emily Archer, Jason Babcock, Nick Kuhn, Justice Kuhn, Cameron Abbey-Mott, Brenna Culbreth, Darian Switzer, Emily Beers, Daisy-Marie Schultz, Brooke Bennett, Jacob Gray, Bryce Gatto, Vincent Noble, Dan McMurray, Allyssa Catalano, Ashley Poletto and Ariel Fuentes. They presented nine posters about genes of a bacteria Kytocoocus sendentarius. Some of these students are pictured with the professionals who assisted them. The Western New York Genetics in Research Partnership is developing an ongoing partnership with schools across a 14-county region in western New York that will serve as a pipeline for teacher and student recruitment, training and mentorship in STEM, (science, technology, engineering and math) with a particular focus on basic genome analysis and bioinformatics in a strategies project.
