John E. "Jack" Abram of Brocton, NY passed away Monday, August 11, 2014 at Buffalo General Hospital.
He was born in the Village of Brocton on July 6, 1922, the son of the late Clarence Abram and Evaline McGrath Abram. He was a graduate of the Cassadaga Valley Central School, Class of 1940.
Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He served in the South and Central Pacific combat areas for 22 months during World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant while attached to VMF312 (an attack fighter Squadron.) He participated in the invasion and defeat of the Japanese on Okinawa. He earned the Presidential Unit Citation, three Bronze Stars and the Campaign ribbon and streamers for duty in the Pacific Theater.
He was a retiree of the Niagara Mohawk Corp., having worked there for 36 years where he held the position of Maintenance Su-pervisor.
Jack was also a 36-year member of L.O.G.I.C. He was a long-time member of the American Legion John W. Dill Post 434 of Brocton, NY and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8647 of Mayville, NY. He was also a member of the National Valley Campers and Hikers of America as well as the Grape Bunch Camping Club. Jack belonged to the Niagara Mohawk Retirees Club, the Mayville Senior Citizens, the Brocton-Portland Civic Association and he was also an active member of the Tri Church Parish of Brocton, New York.
He enjoyed being with his family, and enjoyed his many trips with the Mayville Senior Citizens Group, along with camping, hunting and gardening.
Jack is survived by his wife of 68 years, Fern Pickard Abram; three sons John Dale (Karen) Abram of Brocton, NY, Dan Abram of Mayville, NY, and Terry (Sharon) Abram of Brocton, NY; and one daughter, Katherine (Scott) Abram Veith of Erie, Pa. Jack also leaves 7 grandchildren, Kelly, Megan. Colleen, Scott, Laura, Dennis and Amber and several great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, his twin Mary Abram McNeight Marsh (Harry and Edwin) of Michigan, and Kathleen Abram Zembryski (Stanley) of Cassadaga, NY; two brothers, David (Erica) Abram of Cassadaga, NY and Richard (Elizabeth) Abram of Fre-donia, NY. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers and one sister, William (Mae) Abram of Erie, Pa., Everette (Vivian) Abram of Youngstown, Ohio, Donald (Dee) Abram of Sheridan, NY, and Beverly Abram Busch (Gordon) of Horseheads, NY.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning August 14, 2014 at 10 o'clock from St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church in Brocton, New York where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Joseph Walter. The service will be shared by Pastor Barb Brewer of Tri Church Parish of Brocton, NY. Full military honors will be provided by the American Le-gion John W. Dill Post 434 of Brocton, New York along with a United States Marine Corps Honor Guard.
Friends are invited to call at the Morse Funeral Home 51 Highland Ave. in Brocton, NY from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday August 13, 2014. Interment will be private at the Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
