Thomas Joseph "TJ" Joy, the only child born to Joseph and Angela Joy, was a special little boy with special needs resulting from a rare brain malformation called PolyMicroGyria.
PMG causes feeding problems, developmental delays, mental retardation, and epilepsy.
One week shy of TJ's birthday, he suffered a seizure in his sleep, in which he was unable to wake from. TJ was declared dead on Nov. 7, 2010. Doctors called it Sudden Unexplained Death of an Epileptic Person.
Angela and Joseph were later told that a seizure mattress alarm could have been purchased, preventing his death.
The TJ Joy Fund (and The Joy Ride) was established in TJ's memory to raise funds to purchase these seizure mats to prevent future deaths from seizures and for other financial needs incurred by PMG and epilepsy patients. These mats are not covered by insurance.
An estimated 50,000 Americans die of epilepsy and epilepsy-related causes every year.
Although organizers do not have an exact amount of motorcycles for the event, they have opened preregistration and their goal is an estimated 150 bikes.
The route will start at Jamestown Harley Davidson in Falconer (11 a.m. registration, noon sendoff) throughout western New York and concludes at the Legion in Forestville, where the family-friendly benefit will be held.
Live music will be provided by the Rustic Ramblers and Sean Patrick McGraw. Also attending will be the Maximum Force Wrestlers. There will be food, a silent auction, raffles and more. Some of the items raffled include a tablet, quilts and an Amish-made rocking chair. Doors open and the fun begins at 2 p.m.
Pre-registration will be open until Aug. 24: $15 per bike, $5 per buddy (includes a free gift); day of registration: $20 per bike, $5 per buddy.
For those who wish to attend the benefit without participating in the dice run, admission is $10 per person. (Kids 12 and under free).
