Werner R. Schroeder, 94, of Lake Alfred, FL, died Aug. 16, 2014.
Born in Germany, Mr. Schroeder came to America in 1923 with his parents and two brothers. They settled in Fredonia, NY. He graduated from Fredonia High School in 1937 and earned a B.S. degree from Cornell University in 1941. He retired from Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. in 1976, after 35 years, serving as Chief Plant Chemist the last 14 years.
Mr. Schroeder was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fredonia. He was a life member of Forest Lodge #166 F.& A.M. He served six years on the Fredonia School Board and also one year as School District Treasurer.
Mr. Schroeder and his wife loved to travel, having visited 47 states, 7 Canadian provinces, as well as the British Isles, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
His hobbies and loves were nature and classical and jazz music. He attend-ed many jazz festivals throughout the U.S.A. He was an avid trout fisher-man.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Thekla Schroeder; his brothers Horris and Ernest; his sister, Gertrude Bridenbaker; and his son-in-law, Peter Strassheimer.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Helen Towner Schroeder; and three daughters: Janet Woodend (Harry) of Winter Haven, FL; Barbara Zielinski (Monte) of Frost-proof, FL; and Ann Strassheimer of Winter Haven, Fl. He also leaves four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Internment will be in Webster Road Cemetery in Fredonia.
