GOWANDA - The Go-wanda Police Department may have a some additional leadership in the future. The Gowanda Village Board approved authorizing a promotional test for a police sergeant.
"The promotional test would be to promote a full-time police officer that we have ...," Mayor Heather McKeever said.
Once an officer is promoted, the sergeant position will come with a $5,000 salary increase. The sergeant position will have full authority if Officer in Charge Steve Raiport is not available, including supervision of the department. The position will also have authority to perform employee evaluations.
"It's another way of supervision. If I'm not here or not available, this gives the officer in that sergeant position the ability to oversee the officers ...," Raiport said.
The salary increase will be paid out of available funds in the village budget. According to McKeever, Raiport agreed to a salary $8,000 lower than the previous officer in charge.
"His decrease in salary and not keeping it at that level is making this possible," McKeever said.
Also on the topic of police, the village board approved duties for the officer in charge position in addition to hiring two part-time officers. Cori Kowalski and Earl Farina were approved as part-time officers with Kowalski completing his medical certification. The village board also approved hiring Jason Opferbeck as a part-time employee in the water department.
The village will also change its regular board meeting schedule for September. The village board will meet on Sept. 16 and 30, a change from the second and fourth Wednesday.
