60 Years Strong

August 28, 2014
Observer Today

The International Association of Firefighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association are celebrating 60 years of fundraising together. In 1954 the IAFF started the Fill The Boot Campaign. Annually, thousands of firefighters across the nation line the streets with boots in hand, collecting for the MDA. Today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the City of Dunkirk Professional Firefighters Local 616 will collect money for the MDA on Central Avenue and Fourth Street in Dunkirk. Joining them will be Fredonia Firefighters Local 2931, which will also be collecting from noon to 5 p.m. on Temple and Church streets in Fredonia. In 2013, IAFF raised around $29 million for the MDA, which helps fund 200 clinics, 250 research projects and camp for 3,600 kids. "We would like to thank the community for their past support, and remind them that none of this would be possible without them taking the time to stop and put money in our boots," said Tony Thomas, the Dunkirk Fire Department MDA coordinator.
