On behalf of Mikey Edwards and family, I would like to take this opportunity to simply say thank you. It would be impossible for me to thank every individual, organization and business who donated time, gift baskets, baked goods and monetary gifts. It is even harder to find the words to express the sincere gratitude at the overwhelming outpouring of kindness shown by our community.
I was approached by some very good friends, James Stoyle, Joe Gould and Dave Damico, who wanted to have a benefit on behalf of my son after his diagnosis with stage IV colon cancer. At first, there was some reluctance on our part as not to ask for charity and quite frankly, the reality of the reason for the benefit. They would have none of that and wheels were set in motion.
What happened next was absolutely amazing. Tracy Ossman and Gould co-chaired the benefit with committee members Mike Haynes, Damico, Mike Reed, Keith Ossman, Jidge Stoyle, Jim Muscato, Larry Dietzen, Tony and Amy Thomas, Gus Rivera and Barry Edwards. They put in many hours of planning, gathering, setting up and promoting the event. We cannot begin to express our gratitude to these dear friends.
The Exempts crew provided the awesome meal with the help of Cassadaga Shur Fine, Fred Farms, Weiss Hardware, Burger King and John Scott. There were so many that assisted with cooking, serving, assistance at the bar and cleaning. Our compliments and thank you to the cooks and crew.
Entertainment was provided by Zen City, Hooman, Ten Minutes and Counting, Sara and Christine Pleva, Luis the Rapper, and Gregory Fordo Ford. All of these excellent musicians gave their own time to support the cause and they made the afternoon very enjoyable.
To the establishments that participated in the Amazing race bar crawl included The Filmore, American Legion Post 62, Exempts, The Clarion Hotel, Rookies, Spike Daileys and Barts Cove. Hats off to all of you. I am positive that a good time was had by all.
Thanks to all the local fire departments hose race teams that participated.
Tents were provided by G&E Tents, and Tom Shaffer. Tables and chairs, power, plus the use of the hall and lot was by Post 62. Bounce house was donated by Incredible Bounce, and members of the Dunkirk High School National Honor Society face painted and manned the bounce house.
To all who worked setting up, selling tickets, and running the Chinese auction, thank you. Our appreciation goes out to all who baked and manned the bake sale. With the assistance of Sweet Perfections this was also a success.
To the city of Dunkirk and city employees in the clerks, streets and parks and recreation departments. Thanks for all your help.
Thank you to the OBSERVER for the article written about Mikey and all of the help assisting with the benefit.
To all the businesses and organizations that made contributions, your thoughtfulness is not overlooked. We sincerely thank you.
Finally, to all the hundreds of people who attended the event and were so generous, each and every one of you touched our hearts in so many ways. Our community is second to none when it comes to supporting and stepping up for a cause. This beautiful Sunday in August was the greatest example of all.
Michael D. Edwards Jr. is a Dunkirk resident.
