Close Out 2014 Season
The Fredonia Beaver Club recently held its Seventh annual Horseshoe Tournament. The event was held Sunday, Aug. 17 and hosted a total of 13 teams. First place went to Mike Reiwalt and Rick Burkett, second place went to Chuck Dillenburg and Don Dillenburg and third went to Mike Lawhead and Kenny Dillenburg. Next year’s tournament will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. The club will be looking for more teams to participate.
The Old Timers closed out their 2014 50-plus season last weekend in Youngstown, Ohio. The American Division kicked off a double-elimination tourney Saturday afternoon with No. 5 seed Jamestown facing off against No. 2 seed Chester, W.Va. Chester outhit the Old Timers 20 to six, resulting in a 14-0 shutout to put Jamestown into the loser's bracket. Donny Watts and Ron Thomas each had two hits for the Old Timers.
Later Saturday, Jamestown outlasted No. 4 seed Youngstown, 4-2, in extra innings to stay alive and move into the second round of games Sunday. The Old Timers had 18 hits in the game, led by Thomas going 4 for 4 and Sammy Spera, Wade Nelson and Steve Camarata each with three hits. Spera picked up the win on the mound.
Returning Sunday, the Old Timers faced No. 3 seed Greenville. Jamestown's offense was outmatched in hits 19 to seven, resulting in a 15-2 loss to close out the season.
The Old Timers would like to thank their fans and patrons for a great 2014 season. Club members are reminded of the annual raffle drawing and breakfast at Friendly's Restaurant on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 9 a.m.

Lucky Lanes Junior Bowlers
Registration for the 2014-15 season will be held on Sept. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at Lucky Lanes. Registration runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day.
This year's registration fee is only $10. Youth bowler ages range from 4 to 20 years old as of Aug. 1. Teams may be all boys, all girls, or mixed and leagues will start on Sept. 20. New and returning bowlers must register.
All bowlers from age six to 20 will have their choice of bowling on the 10 a.m. or the 1 p.m. shift each Saturday. Bowlers ages 4 and 5 will participate in the Bumper Buddies League, which bowls at 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
NCCYHA High School Ice Hockey Tryouts Being Held
Northern Chautauqua County Youth Hockey Association is holding tryouts for the 2014-15 high school varsity and jayvee ice hockey teams. The tryouts are being held Sept. 14, from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m., at Steele Hall Ice Arena on the SUNY Fredonia campus.
Every player in the Dunkirk, Fredonia and surrounding communities are welcome to try out. Players must be enrolled in high school this coming school year while eighth graders must pass a physical if selected for a team.
All players are asked to bring a $10 tryout fee, plus a dark and a light jersey with a name on them. For more information, go to www.NCCYHA.com.
Gowanda Soccer, Touch Football, Softball Begin in September
The Gowanda youth co-ed soccer and touch football programs will return this fall. On five consecutive Monday nights beginning Sept. 8, soccer for children in grades K-7 will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the George Dispenza Memorial Field on Broadway Road. Co-ed touch football will be held at the same location and time on five consecutive Wednesday nights beginning Sept. 10 for children in grades 3 through 7.
After a four-year hiatus, adult men's recreational softball games will also be held at the same site each Tuesday night beginning Sept. 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This will precede the 16th Annual Slowpitch tournament slated for Saturday, Sept. 6.
