christopher is correct. Way back in the 90s I heard that WNY was considered part of Apppalachia. that means we need to ban fracking and raise taxes, liberal largess like cronig says, to tax our way into the promised land ! Like Detroit !

Not questioning the truthfulness of anything, Phil, merely pointing out lots of differences between certain areas. We are a depressed area, period! Remember the outcry when Spitzer said we were part of Appalachia? Well, we ARE!!!

You want to faint? Check out the property taxes paid in Alabama. Who turns out fantastic football players? Where is the money going in New York? Again, I want to see that budget on the front page every month.

Back to the question ... Do you think merging sports teams is good for student athletes
Yes if it means keeping programs safe and alive. The days of bringing a freshman up to a varsity football practice because the varsity does not have 22 true varsity players to practice with are gone. Sports are an important part of the American education system and if merging keeps them going than do it. The real solution is merging multiple school districts , such as a county school district!
so cade and commentor, what you are saying is that the WSJ and the afternoon talk shows on PBS staffed by women and the books they say are dirt. cade, every post shows how ignorant you are ! facts from womens websites too and you still think I am stupid wow.
dk, your are confusing these posters with facts. they will say like commentor there is no proof. there never is enough proof for these people. I knew several people who moved south. They spoke of the much less taxes they pay. In NY, people believe like cronig, the govt did everything.

commentor. no proof as to what i say ? your kidding right ? lets see, i get my stuff from PBS, WSJ , books, librarians and personal experience. You bought my stuff in the store . You even ate trace amounts of aromatic surfactants in food. hows that for no proof. But you have no idea of how the world works. yuou just want me to divulge my real name . If I do that , that will still not be considered proof. Any chemist would know what i am talking about. your replies show you know NOTHING at all about the chemical world. or the people in it, almost all guys.
there are 2 veiw and thats is, if you are a student you dont want to merge, more play and more playing time. If its the pocket book, they want to merge to save move, less play less cost.

women are dirt in steiners mind. And if you post something off goverment and science websites its garbage, if its out of Stieners outdated few books it is the WORD.
Its sure looks as if Stiener is one of those extreme radical muslum nut jobs.
No one in Chaut Co knows what "fiscal common sense" means, let alone practice it.

Yeah, we have Cadillac school...artificial turf at all new high schools, and we add - every single year - because we growing: 2,500-3,000 new students, 2-3 new schools, and 400-600 new teachers.
But we don't increase administrative overhead to a great degree - still have just 1 super - instead spending money on things like AP courses (adding a tech high school soon) an online 24/7 curriculum, smartboards in every classroom, FIOS at all schools, and, soon, a tablet for every student grades 5-12.
And we still have mascots, school colors, rivalries, etc. Rather than worrying if you can field a team, worry about how robust your cirriculua are in preparing kids for life after high school.

Here's a VA county example: 70,000 students, with one super - Chau Cty taxpayers spend $3M/yr more - every year! -for their 18 supers. We have a school board, but the school budget is set/approved by the county legislature, which helps to keep spending under control.
We have one highway dept, one assessor's office, one police/sheriff's department, one county-wide water and sewer dept. And that model is used in counties with populations ranging from 150k up to 1M.
Even though my county is named by Forbes as the wealthiest in the US ($120k avg. household income and 25% over $200k), we practice fiscal common sense.
To keep property taxes from going up, all county employees (including teachers) had a 3-yr wage freeze. Contrast that with what happens every year in Chau Cty...

The topic was: merging sports teams, but since Phil brought it up, I'll add that I pay approx $2500/yr in taxes on my DK home, which I paid $30K in '82. The house is NOT in disrepair, however, it's now approx 100 yrs old. This same house is assessed at $51K, but the best offer I've gotten to date is $22K. Does this sound like the assessed value is accurate?
BTW, when I bought it, there was no tipping/sewer fee, and the water bill was $15/qtr.
CHRISTOPHER - I have a cousin living in Henrico, County Virginia who purchased a brand new home and pays under $1500 per year total in taxes. He said all services in his area are administered at the county level. THAT IS A TRUE STORY!
Steinernut you are mocked and laughed at because there is absolutely no proof of what you say you are. Anyone can say what you say and make the same claims even a woman. You should take a clue when all posters here think you are a joke. Just out of embarrassment, even though I know you are not, you should provide proof or just go away. I see there is only 1 agree on making all sports private like Hockey. Must be the issue is paying for them. As for consolidations you can consolidate all schools in Chautauqua County and not solve a thing. Chautauqua Lake School is a perfect example. They are in as much trouble as everyone else after consolidation. If they don't address the real problem.....SPENDING nothing is solved. This goes for consolidating governments also.

haveanice day, you missed the point. the gals waitressing had to get the largest tips to pay for their large student loans, education is run by the libs. These gals then developed people skills in the process which are important today, unless you want to be a nerd and stuck in the corner cubicle somewhere. these gals, the ones I knew made the most money and were in demand in the field. they had secured positions in industry. I say again, the charm aspect was written by gals trying to break into the boys club science. How is it you posters are so stupid on this ? i never met such ignorant people in 40 years in chemicals than the ones who post here.
I agree with Steiner, we should train all of the females to be waitresses. If you are appalled by my statement then you are dumber than steiner and don't understand sarcasm.
hey christopher, what is with you too ? Who the hades runs the education system ?Liberals . christopher you are not very smart, you repeatedly miss the obvious and then post to appear smart. Why has education sky rocketed in cost at all levels ? who runs the show at all levels ? liberals Paul. but they cant be the problem can they paul ?paul you have lost all analytical skills in thinking.Almost every member of my generation acoss the 25 states says that one cant be a one person income family anymore. costs, epsecially education have soared. libs , paul, libs at the root of the problem
I agree, DKexpat does post consistently worthy comments (I enjoy his humor, too). Certain factors that may prevent equitable comparisons between NY & VA is also a valid point.
To add to my last post, I realize that concerns involving the loss of traditional sports rivalries/mascots are raised during merger talks, but considering the "potential" for significant savings (if done right), I'd say such concerns are pretty much ignorant.
Dk, what is it with you and posting a quote ? What is it with you saying i am ripe for mocking when I get my info from personal experience, the WSJ, PBS, my 2000 volume private library. The science stuff is real even if you dont understand it. thats the technique here, issue a mock, then a quote and one thinks I sure am smart. No its the other way dk,.

No disrespect to DKexpat, one of the better contributors to arguments here, but at times the comparison's to Virginia and NYS are not fair. I'd bet the taxes collected regardless of rate are much higher due to valuation where he lives. I'd also LOVE to know how Virginia deals with certain aspects of education compared to here, but too long a discussion. The County consolidations he mentions would be a huge benefit regardless of anything else.
How many teachers, aides, admins, faculty, & Supts. are employed in the 18 school districts in Chaut Co? Add support from spouses, families & friends and THIS IS WHY so much opposition against mergers exists, NOT to save school mascots or protect sports rivalries. These are merely weak, diversionary excuses.
Yes, low enrollments (ie; declining population) warrant mergers, but merging doesn't address WHY people are leaving. School taxes isn't the sole reason, but it's a major one.
Take DK's school budget for example. It costs OVER $40 MILLION PER/YR to teach approx 2000 kids! This equates to $20K per student per yr. College costs vary, but under DK's cost structure, a 4-yr education (K-3) costs $80,000 FOR A 3RD GRADE EDUCATION, or a total of $260,000 to complete HS (under the current rate).
The cost to earn a teaching degree & endless labor cost increases is what's destroying the public ED system, at least here in Chaut Co.
And, btw, I wasn't speaking to you two directly, I agree with you 100%. The populace here needs a BIG, BIG, BIG wakeup call, and even though it's happening right now, they're still hitting Snooze.

Darkstar and Christopher, this is where the tomfoolery needs to end. It is utterly insane and ridiculous to hang your kid's future on what his mascot's identity will be. This inflexbility is becoming legendary in WNY. The decades of (lack of) reaction to slimming population should be screaming to you that you need to change your thinking, or at least accept consolidation with open arms. In 20 years there will be no more youth here to pit against each other, not to mention worry about how the marauders will do against the Hillbillies. FFS, people, get your g--dam--d heads on straight for ONCE and see where your county is heading. PLEASE.
