Dunkirk Fastpitch softball tournament set

The 42nd annual Dunkirk Fastpitch Softball tournament, sponsored by the First Ward Falcons, will begin Friday, July 14 at 5:45 p.m. and runs until Sunday, July 16. Championship game is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Games will be at Promenschenkel Stadium and at No. 7 School. Food and concession stands will be available all weekend long.

Cassadaga Valley Midget Football

The Cassadaga Valley Midget Football program will be conducting equipment handouts from 9:00am-12:00 p.m., Saturday, July 22, at the storage facility on Route 60 across from the Valley Shack in Sinclairville. Anyone who has not yet signed up can come that day and sign up. Players and cheerleaders who turn six years old before Aug. 1 through age 8 will be eligible for flags, and those from age nine years old and will not be 12 until after Aug. 1 can play tackle. Please bring a birth certificate and a physical form for each athlete. Cost is $65 per athlete, $85 for two and $105 for over two. If you have any questions, call Jeff at 499-2244.

Vineyards Golf Course Friday Night Couples

Golf will resume this Friday (July 14) with a 5 p.m. shotgun start for the couples’ league. This league is open to all skill levels of golfers with dinner to follow after golf. Please sign up at the Vineyards Golf Course no later than Thursday afternoon so we can have a head count for dinner. You can stop in or call the Vineyards at 672-7888.

Despite managing only six hits, the Yanks (6-4) scored five in the first and one in the second, then hung on for the nail-biting win over the Giants (4-4). Rich Hofer (two hits, two RBI) led the way at the plate for the pin-stripers, while Joe Pantano (double) scored twice. Dennis Gawronski pitched five solid innings for the win, yielding only one earned run. Matt Eaker closed the game out on the hill. The pair scattered 10 hits, while walking two and striking out four. For the Giants, Alberto Benejan (double) poked two hits while Nick Raynor had two RBIs. Jason Tomkiewicz struck the big blow with a three-run bomb in the seventh. Brian Watts was the starting and losing pitcher, while Jeremiah Kurgen pitched five plus innings of shutout ball in relief. The pair struck out six and walked five batters.
